Severe Weather Nashville - Winter Edition

Nashville sure has a lot of severe weather alerts. This is the running tab for Winter (Dec 21 - Mar 20).

Mar 20: Its spring.... read on in this post.

Mar 19: Snow Flurries, though it supposed to be spring

Mar 3: Tornado Watch. Nashville got a bad thunderstorm.

Feb 16
A crazy thunderstorm with raindrops the size of marbles hitting the car windshield on the drive home. Another thunderstorm last night with booming thunder and lightning flashes.

Flowers in Bloom, though the weather still can't make up its mind between warm and cold. The temperate has fluctuated almost 50 degrees last week.

Feb 2: The slick roads continue,
But this morning woke up to ice sculptures that looked like neural dendrites. All the trees and branches were covered with a layer of see through ice, so you could see the brown under the icy surface which was refracting daylight. This phenomena known as hoarfrost It was quite the sight to see. Icicles had also formed on top of the window sills and were dripping away throughout the day. So what causes hoarfrost - it's when surface temp below freezing, air above close to freezing. Sublimation causes water vapor to turn directly to ice.

Feb 1: Black ice on roads from yesterday's snow fall. Classes moved online due to the icy roads. Woke up to see smattering of snow on the lawn, a wet and gleaming road in front of house with patches of ice.

What on earth is Black ice? It's a thin and transparent layer of ice that forms on roads/driveways/sidewalks. Its called "black" as it's so clear that it appears to be the same color as the road surface underneath, rather than the typical white-gray of snow and other ice. Slick ices  means danger - very slippery for walking and driving.

Jan 31. Snow flurries and freezing rain.

Jan 30. Severe Fog all day. Potential Freezing Rain tonite
What does Freezing Rain even mean?
It happens when the ground temperature is below-freezing but the atmospheric temperature is above-freezing. So the liquid raindrops freeze as soon as they hit the ground or any exposed surface.  The danger to humans is slick ice, both driving and walking.
Jan 24, 2023 - Wind Advisory

Jan 19: Wind Advisory. Garbage cans were scattered in front of houses all around neighborhood

Jan 13, 2023: Snow flurries all day.
What is a snow flurry anyway? It's a brief and light snowfall with scattered snowflakes driven by light winds, creating a light precipitation event.

Jan 12, 2023 Thunderstorm going on in Nashville.
".... 60 mph wind gusts. Half Dollar size Hail... 1.25 inch. ..For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building."

Luckily it stopped at just heavy rains with thunder and lightning. We missed the 13mph twister that devastated 50 miles of Selma, Alabama located just south of where we are.

In the meantime, dry California, which is not used to rain, is getting battered with the relentless rain deluge, wind gusts, flooding, mudslides and sinkholes with seven consecutive storms starting just before the start of 2023. Flooding is inevitable when you get 1 month worth of rain falling in one day with a cumulative effect with storm after storm. The annual wildfires and the continued drought had left behind bare hills and parched soil, which aggravate the mudslides and floods.

Climate change in action.

Jan 8 - Dense Fog Advisory. Visibility around 1/4 mile in dense fog.

Jan 3, 2023 Tornado Watch as well as Flood Advisory due to severe thunderstorms.
A lot of rain today.
