The brain is a Giant Prediction Machine

Poem follows Prof Mark Wallace's comment in class "The Brain is a giant prediction machine" after a discussion on the growing popularity of Bayesian Statistical Models in research.

The brain is a giant prediction machine

Bayesian model-like, it constantly schemes

Past experiences and memories in its grasp

Current sensory input, processed in a flash.

Knowledge and expectations guide its way

Cultural and social contexts sway

Internal beliefs and emotions influence prediction

Cognitive biases and heuristics in full conviction

Prefrontal and parietal cortex at play
Spatial awareness and decision making in sway
Cerebellum, once for motor control thought
Aids prediction as new insights are sought

Basal ganglia, reward and habit
Hippocampus, consolidate and fit
All contributing to the brain's prediction style
A remarkable feat that has left us in awe for a while.

The subconscious mind may hold the key

Posterior permutations we are yet to measure and see

Whispers and nudges along the way

As we predict the world day by day

Sifts through data to build a view

An internal map of what is true

Predict future based on past

And learns from errors unsurpassed

Ever evolving, it seeks to outrun

A prediction machine in constant inception
